Unhinged Review

I know I haven’t review anything since October, but I was dealing with two major projects for college. Since it’s the holidays, I finally have freedom, so I’ve decided it’s time to update my tragic blog. I’ve been reading “Unhinged” and so far, I’m liking it, so this was supposed to be a mini review but now it’s not because I decided to include background of one of my favorites 🙂   – This contains spoilers!!!! –   *Credit to KimBiva and Lezhin comics of course!

Chapters 1 – 31

Unhinged is about a woman named Erika who ends up in prison because she’s been accused of murdering her husband. Some background on Erika is her upbringing is very tragic. Erika’s mother was sick and basically dies while sleeping I assume because the police find her and Erika in bed. Erika’s mom has been dead for some time because of the state she’s shown in. Erika is then pulled off her mom because while in bed with her dead mom, they were holding hands. Erika has a thing for hands, not in a weird way but maybe missing her mom’s touch then her husband’s because it happens throughout the story. The story then moves to grown up Erika, she grows up and falls in love with her husband James. One day from coming home, she finds her husband dead. She is of course the prime suspect which isn’t unusual. She goes to prison because there weren’t any suspects also only her fingerprints were found at the scene. Something Erika says while in prison “of course my prints were all over, I live there”. I wonder why Erika didn’t have an alibi because it seems like she was coming home from work. I also wonder what police thought her motive was, because it seems to the reader that she was in happy marriage. I think this will play out later in the story.

Erika

Erika is finally release from prison around seven years later. She plans to find who killed her husband. She first goes someone she suspects and visits his home, only to find out there already two people there, murdering him. At first the two men don’t know what to do in the situation but find out she also came to kill him too but find her attempt laughable. They call their boss on the phone, the boss says not to kill Erika but to bring her to their location. After taking Erika to the location, the boss who wears a box on her head asks if she wants to join their organization. There are two members already, the ones she met at the house. Paul is one of them. He is happy-go-lucky type also his fashion sense gives me high court vibes. Almost like he belongs in a painting.

Next is Boom, he has long blonde hair and big round glasses also wears face mask so mostly all of his face is covered. He doesn’t really say much. He has this mystery vibe towards him. I low-key like him, I haven’t liked a fictional character since Fyodor and Shibusawa. I digress…Then we have the boss who is named box. There isn’t really info on her yet. Unlike the two members, she doesn’t kill people. She sends the others. Their mission is to clean up society and get rid of bad people. This reminded me of Dexter, ugh I loved that show. If you haven’t seen it, check out it. It’s probably on some streaming site. Anyway, back to this….

She reluctantly joins. Box warns not to call to cops and that she’s always watching. When saying good-bye to Erika, box actually puts a camera on Erika so now she really can see everything she does. Erika’s first mission is a couple, they take in orphans or kids from the streets but sells them after giving them food and shelter. Erika pretends to be a new neighbor moving in and gets in quickly because of how nice the couple seem to be. Later Boom comes with Paul and they murder the couple. Erika is taken back by this because she thinks the couple was super sweet and nice. She feels sick while riding back to their location. Paul gives Erika some pills to help calm her and they get into who was their first kill was. Obviously, Erika hasn’t killed anyone, but Paul admits he killed his parents. Paul was beaten both physically and mentally by his father until he finally cracked. As he continues driving, there’s another car who gets upset because it seems like Paul isn’t paying attention, so they yell some horrible stuff at him and drive away. This triggers him, he drives after them and both parties get out of their cars, the driver and his friend continue to yell at Paul and co. Paul is so mad that he murders them, it’s almost as he blacked out from the rage he had. Later Paul goes away to recharge because of what happened. So, it’s just Boom and Erika. We later learn more about Paul like he was kept in asylum like place where he somewhat imprisoned and only goes out to kill people, this then owner or boss then gives Box Paul.

Box checks on Paul since his episode, Paul seems still distraught and Box holds up a watch (I’m 90% sure it’s a watch but I did read this a while ago – sorry if it’s not correct) and is connected to Paul’s body. It’s as if he has a chip that can go off and explode, if she touches a button on it –it could kill him. This scares the shit of Paul, and the story moves to Erika and Boom getting supplies. They run out of gas and she discovers that Boom draws and that he’s really good at it. They later finally get a gas and go home. At home, Boom is in his basement and a tortured woman sitting on a chair but she’s bleeding out because her legs in a large bucket. She also has a noose around her neck.  Boom is sitting some distance away from drawing her and asked her to show new emotions since she has only shown anger and sadness. This upset Boom, so he knocks her off the chair and she starts suffocating and this brings him joy because it’s a new emotion and draws it. He also has a Hannibal (tv show) like statue of dead women posed like they’re looking up at something but there isn’t anything there in the middle for the art piece to be completed.

Boom❤

Boom later gets a new mission from Box and goes to a shady part of the city. He visits a woman who is a madam. We found we out that this is Boom’s mom and how he raised. Boom’s mother got pregnant and Boom’s dad didn’t stick around which cause his mother’s resentment. She is constantly reminded by Boom’s father because Boom looks like his dad. She basically treats him like shit and even kicks out when super young like around ten or younger. Boom’s outlet is art, even when he was little he would draw. Boom comes home after being kicked out, and his mom tries to drown him, his uncle eventually takes him in. He starts living with him, his uncle seems nice and also into art. Boom’s uncle is in shady stuff because Boom witnesses a murder. One guy is dying by hanging, Boom and his uncle are trying to draw him, but his uncle can’t stomach the sight, but Boom can. He later sells Boom’s art and gets a lot of money, they start living the good life because of Boom’s art. The uncle spends his money on women and drugs. He even gets Boom to try coke and later he’s on different types of drugs while still being a child. Boom’s uncle tries to leave Boom, but Boom kills him and sets the house on fire. Boom tries to kill himself but survives with severe burns on his lower face. While in the hospital, healing from his burns, his mother comes to see him but sees the state he’s in and she almost turns around to leave, until she hears how rich Boom is and dramatically reunites with her son which surprises him. It goes back to present day, Boom questions his mom on “why she gave birth to him” which she doesn’t answer. He gives a suitcase to her, and his mom opens it expecting money because it seems like Boom would send her money based on their earlier interactions. It’s an empty suitcase with a tiny piece of paper saying “good-bye”  since his mom has some sight issues she lowers her head to read it. In which Boom closes it, murdering her with it. He also completes his statue art piece of dead women with his mom in the middle. Boom’s mom looks like angel on a throne made of body parts. I feel bad for Boom because he considers himself a monster, but I don’t think he is, he’s just very troubled.

Paul

Later, Erika starts her training, so she can go on missions with Boom and Paul. They’re training at Boom’s house which is in the middle of the woods. She’s learning to shoot and fight. She is getting to know the other members. I also like the fact Paul sometimes call Boom, Bloom. I had to mention it because it was cute. I also noticed Boom doesn’t eat with others so maybe Paul doesn’t know about Boom’s burns. Boom’s training is mostly observing Erika’s technique then giving feedback. Erika so far has been doing well with a little bit of bumps on the road. She even impressed Boom when she had to fight him off. After training they were fixing boxes downstairs and Erika almost went down to Boom’s basement, but Paul warned her it’s off limits because that’s where his art is. While fixing boxes, Box calls – Boom and Paul have to go pick up supplies while Erika stays at the house. Curiosity gets the better of Erika and she heads down to the basement. She notices it smells and turns on the lights to find bodies and body parts in rows, she vomits and quickly makes a run for it. Erika almost goes back upstairs when she sees a display case of hands which makes her pause and reminded her of her loved ones. Boom finds her down there and beats her. I honestly thought he might kill her, Erika does have an opening to kill Boom but doesn’t. Boom also has a chance to kill her but doesn’t. After escaping she runs out of the basement leaving a confused Paul behind, Paul then asked Boom what happened, Boom says “I told you she wouldn’t do it.” So, maybe it was test??? I don’t know…. If I was Erika, I don’t think I would kill Boom either because he’s like an acquaintance, but they shared some fucked up experiences so maybe more like a distanced friend…

So that’s where I left off, I can’t wait to see how Erika recovers from this also how she does on missions. I also want to see if she finds her husband’s killer. I want to know more about the other characters because they all seem interesting, so it’ll be fascinating to see how the story is going to play out. It’s a bit of graphic story with the murder but not too bad (well not to me but I like horror movies and ID channel) there are some light moments within the characters mostly Paul, so I would recommend it if you’re into that.

*I’m going to have more updates coming! So please keep a lookout.
