The category is …. Review! Ok bad joke I’ll exit stage left…

I’ve been watching this show since day one. This is from episodes 1 – 7. Pose is set in a the 1980s and follows a group of transgenders also gay men. In the first episode, you see the house of abundance coming up with a theme for the ball. A house is a family who watches out for one other and there is a mother in each house. The house of abundance mother is Elektra, she reminds me of Naomi Campbell because her style is flawless and overall just fierce. She is often idolized by others because she can pass as a woman. The house attends balls, where they compete against other houses or individuals for trophies and status. The balls give a sense of community to all groups in LGBTQ which aren’t treated great in the real world. So, it’s a safe place for them. Blanca starts off in the abundance, she comes up with great themes for the house but not given credit. She expresses her feeling with Elektra and leaves the house of abundance. She starts her own house, house of Evangelista (named after the model). The series mostly focuses on Blanca and her house. She wanted to start a house because she found out that she is suffering from HIV, which she shares the news with her friend Pray, who is the MC of the balls. She slowly starts to create her house, she discovers a homeless young man dancing for money who was kicked out of his home because his dad discovered some gay magazines. Blanca learns more about young man when she invites him to dinner, his name is Damon and why he came to New York was to go to a dance company. He joins the house and Blanca helps him to try out for the dance company of his dreams. Blanca is those moms who will have your back and support you through everything which was different from Elektra who is colder. Damon gets into his dream company after his audition. Damon learns everything about houses and ball culture through Blanca and Pray. He even finds a boyfriend, who also joins the house after proving himself during a ball.
Let me add more info on Blanca because she’s the mother of the house. She is honestly too good for the world especially after all she went through. She looks after everyone and just wants what’s best for them. She also wants to make the world better; one way is being accepted at a popular gay bar who doesn’t serve her and even kicks her out multiple times. She even ends up in jail, lucky Elektra bails her out and tells her to focus on the balls. There is a rivalry against the two houses, when house of Evangelista wins and there’s also a mother of year award coming up in the series which Elektra wins year after year. You also see a little of Blanca’s past when her mother passes away, this also brings her house closer.

Another to join is Angel who was in the house of abundance, she’s my favorite. I love her style, for fall I need a pink faux coat like hers. She is great addition to the house, during the day, she is prostitute but stops when she meets Evan Peter’s character Stan who is businessman. Even though he is married and trying to make it in the business. Their relationship then moves from hotel rooms to Stan getting her an apartment even though she also has room at Blanca’s apartment. Angel then breaks up with Stan when she found out about Stan’s curiosity about her. Stan’s wife Patty seeks Angel out after finding out about Stan’s affair. Angel answers all of Patty’s questions but then adds she didn’t like how she felt like a doll, being a display until he was ready to play with her. Stan eventually goes back to Angel and they share a moment where Angel works (she also works at a peep show place). They start dating and living together but Stan later leaves Angel after attending a ball because he thinks they don’t really belong together because of how different their worlds are. Stan also seems to not know who he truly is, so I think that’s why he’s struggling. I low-key want them to work out because I really like them together, but I don’t want Angel to get hurt. I want her to be happy so if it includes Stan or not. We’ll see in the finale.
Another major character is Elektra, even as a mother of house of abundance, she often treats her children cold. She also struggles whether going through gender reassignment surgery or keeping her relationship with a wealthy boyfriend who funds her lifestyle. She ends up having the surgery because that’s what she always wanted. She gets dump by her wealthy boyfriend. Everything starts falling apart after the break up because she’s behind on rent also her children leave her, so she’s left to herself. She tries to find another wealthy boyfriend, but they’re only interested if she’s still trans. She ends up working at the peep show place and then the episode ends. I’m really rooting for her, even though she can be bitchy, she worked too hard to start over.
Throughout the series, you also see Pray dealing with his partner dying and getting news that he has HIV. This show is filled with so much heart because of the stories being told. You’ll end up rooting for all the characters because everybody is amazing. Another reason to watch is the fashion, the ball fashion is EVERYTHING!!! If they’re looking for an extra for those scenes, PICK ME!!! Lol. So definitely check out this awesome show.
